TCL Files Federal Lawsuit Against Samsung Over Misleading Mini LED Claims

Consumer‑electronics company TCL has taken legal action against Samsung in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit, filed on Monday, accuses Samsung of falsely advertising its M Model televisions as featuring Mini LED technology, a claim TCL says is untrue.

Allegations of deceptive marketing

TCL alleges Samsung marketed the M Model TVs as “supreme” Mini LED sets, while the devices are actually standard LED panels repurposed from a recycled product line. According to TCL, the televisions contain none of the technological advancements associated with Mini LED, such as higher dynamic range and greater contrast ratios.

“Samsung’s false advertising misled consumers who wanted the higher picture quality associated with Mini LED televisions into buying Samsung’s falsely labeled product, unfairly damaging TCL’s sales, goodwill, and valuable technology,” said TCL attorney R.C. Harlan in a statement.

Impact on market share

TCL claims its Mini LED televisions delivered substantially better picture quality and that the company overtook Samsung in U.S. Mini LED TV sales between 2023 and 2025. The lawsuit asserts that Samsung launched its M Model TVs in March at prices below TCL’s lowest‑priced Mini LED models, further eroding TCL’s market share.

The complaint seeks a court order blocking Samsung from using the “Mini LED” label on the disputed products and requests an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

Samsung’s response

Representatives for Samsung have not responded to requests for comment.

The case highlights ongoing competition in the high‑end television market, where manufacturers vie for consumer trust by promoting advanced display technologies.
