Tarpon Springs community mourns veteran diesel mechanic after workplace accident

Tarpon Springs, Fla. – The loss of Justin Wilt, a 36‑year‑old U.S. Army veteran and diesel mechanic, has deeply affected the local community. Wilt suffered critical injuries during a mechanical accident at Suncoast Paving on August 10, when an explosion was reported at the company’s facility on 800 Anclote Road. First responders from Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue arrived quickly, and Wilt was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he died a few days later.

Family remembers a devoted father and skilled worker

Cheyenne Leigh White, mother of Wilt’s five‑year‑old daughter and three‑year‑old son, described him as “one of my best friends” who loved his children above all else. His sister, Kayla Wilt, recalled that he was “the strongest person I think I’ve ever met” and praised his intelligence and humor, noting that he was always playing pranks from childhood through adulthood.

Beyond his mechanical talents, Wilt was celebrated for his dedication to his family. His daughter, Oakland Grace, who is autistic, has flourished with her father’s support. Kayla said, “Justin took so much pride in educating himself and those around him, wanting everyone to accept her for who she is, not for the label she was given.” He also cherished time with his son, Colt, often taking him on tractor rides and telling him, “Daddy is going to work to get the monies.”

Community response and lasting legacy

In the wake of his passing, an online fundraiser has raised more than $12,000 to support Wilt’s children. The family also shared that Wilt’s organ donation saved three lives, extending his impact beyond his immediate family.

Suncoast Paving has not responded to requests for comment at the time of this report. Local officials, including the Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue and Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, provided information for this story.

Remembering a veteran’s service

Wilt’s military background was a point of pride for his family and friends. His service in the U.S. Army exemplified a commitment to country that continued in his civilian work as a diesel mechanic, where he could “fix virtually anything with wheels.” The community’s tributes reflect both his professional skill and his personal devotion to family and faith.

As Tarpon Springs residents reflect on this tragedy, the outpouring of support underscores the town’s close‑knit nature and the value placed on honoring those who serve both in uniform and in everyday life.
