Lake County Animal Services announced a large‑scale rescue operation early this week after authorities discovered 85 dogs and 14 horses at a single residence in Groveland, Florida. Whitney Boylston, director of the office of animal services, called the operation “record‑breaking” for the county.
Rapid response and processing
Boylston said the sheer number of animals required an “assembly line” approach to ensure each dog received a veterinary exam, vaccinations, photographs and other intake steps. The team completed the initial processing in roughly five hours, a demanding task for staff who had to handle admissions paperwork for every animal.
While many of the dogs were in normal condition, several suffered from dermatitis or hair loss. The rescued horses were described as “severely underweight,” prompting the county to set up a temporary off‑site shelter to accommodate the influx.
Placement of rescued dogs
By noon Thursday, all but one of the dogs had been transferred to other shelters. Seventeen were sent to Poodle and Pooch, while forty found homes at Pet Alliance locations. According to Kenny Tallier of Pet Alliance, twenty dogs went to the organization’s Orlando shelter and another twenty to its Sanford facility.
The rescued mixed‑breed terriers have already received vaccinations, but they still require heartworm testing and microchipping before they can be adopted. Tallier indicated that the dogs will be available for adoption in about a week.
Community support and next steps
Pet Alliance is asking local residents to donate bath towels and puppy pads to help care for the animals while they await adoption. Once cleared, the dogs will be listed on the shelter’s website for prospective adopters.
Boylston emphasized the mission of the animal services department: “We want to find them good forever homes and take them out of the bad conditions they were in and let them know it’s time to be spoiled and loved.”
Investigation underway
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the dogs and horses are under investigation. No further details have been released at this time.
