Tarpon Springs Next Door? No — Gulfport Is the One You Should Know About

There is a small city tucked along Boca Ciega Bay, just southwest of downtown St. Petersburg, that most visitors drive straight past on their way to the beaches. That is their loss — and, quietly, Gulfport’s great fortune. Because Gulfport, with its mile-long beachfront boulevard, its painted Victorian storefronts, and its stubborn refusal to become anything other than itself, is one of the most genuinely charming places on the entire Gulf Coast of Florida.

I wandered into Gulfport on a Tuesday afternoon without much of a plan, which turns out to be exactly the right approach. Beach Boulevard — the main artery that runs through what locals simply call “the Arts District” — is lined with independent galleries, antique dealers, bead shops, vintage clothing boutiques, and cafés that don’t seem to be in any hurry at all. There are hand-lettered sandwich boards on the sidewalk. There are cats sitting in windows. It feels less like a tourist corridor and more like a neighborhood that happens to welcome strangers warmly.

The focal point of it all is the Gulfport Casino Ballroom, a 1941 waterfront venue that is still very much alive and wonderfully strange. Despite the name, there is no gambling — the word “casino” here refers to its original Italian meaning: a gathering place. And gather people do. On Tuesday and Friday evenings, the ballroom hosts ballroom dancing open to the public, with a live band and an instruction period before the main event. I showed up on a Friday knowing absolutely zero steps and left two hours later having foxtrotted badly but enthusiastically with three different partners, including a woman named Gloria who told me she had been coming every week for eleven years. The admission was a few dollars. The view of the bay from the ballroom windows was free.

Beyond the dancing, Gulfport is defined by its art scene in the most unpretentious sense of the word. The Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market — held every Tuesday from October through May — fills a stretch of Beach Boulevard with local produce, handmade jewelry, pottery, and live music. The Gulfport Waterfront District hosts First Friday ArtWalks year-round, when the galleries stay open late and the street takes on a festival atmosphere without losing its neighborhood soul.

For dinner, there are a handful of excellent options within steps of the waterfront. Sea Dog Brewing has a location here that draws a relaxed crowd. Pia’s Trattoria has been a local institution for years, with a romantic courtyard that fills up fast on weekends. The point is: you will not go hungry, and you will not feel rushed.

Parking is easy. The beach — a small, calm, swimmable stretch of Boca Ciega Bay — is free. The atmosphere is genuinely laid-back in a way that the larger beaches nearby simply cannot replicate. Gulfport has a population of around 12,000 people and it wears that small-town identity with tremendous pride.

What I keep coming back to is the feeling of the place. St. Petersburg is a city that has changed quickly over the last decade — new towers, new restaurants, new energy. Gulfport has watched all of that happen from a comfortable distance and decided, collectively, that it would rather stay exactly as it is: a little bohemian, a little salty, and completely, defiantly itself. For anyone who wants a break from the curated St. Pete experience and something that feels more like stumbling into real Florida life, Gulfport is where you go. Just don’t tell too many people.
