Tampa Honors Gold Star Families at Memorial Day Ceremony

On Memorial Day, Tampa’s Riverwalk became a place of solemn remembrance as the community gathered to honor Gold Star families and the sacrifices of fallen military service members. The ceremony, held at MacDill Park, was a poignant reminder of the true cost of freedom.

Community Remembrance

Brigadier General Chip Diehl, serving as the Master of Ceremonies, emphasized the importance of such gatherings. ‘These types of ceremonies allow us to remember,’ Diehl stated. ‘Be an example and be appreciative of what that cost was. It’s our 250th anniversary this Memorial Day to remember that cost.’

A commemorative wreath was placed at the memorial monument, symbolizing the community’s respect and gratitude. Local records indicate that over 300 Gold Star families reside in the Bay Area, underscoring the personal impact of military service on the community.

Honoring Sacrifice

The Command Chaplain for the U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, Army Colonel Chris Dickey, addressed attendees, urging them to honor the fallen by living purposeful lives. ‘It’s a reminder we need to give our very best,’ he said. ‘We honor our fallen by giving our lives a purpose and living lives that uphold the freedom they gave their lives to protect and to enable.’

Retired U.S. Air Force Major Miguel Reece, who served for over 30 years, reflected on the nature of military service. ‘They talk about service. To me, we got paid to serve, but how we achieve that service is through sacrifice,’ Reece remarked. ‘I just hope we can acknowledge their sacrifice.’

Ongoing Support for Families

The event was organized by CRISP, a Tampa-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting the local military community. The organization’s mission, encapsulated in its acronym—Commitment, Respect, Integrity, Service, and Pride—was evident in the day’s proceedings.

While Memorial Day serves as a national day of recognition, local organizers stressed that for Gold Star families, the significance of their loved ones’ sacrifices is a daily reality. This underscores the need for continuous community support beyond the holiday.
