Cincinnati Nonprofits Unite to Provide Instruments to Local Students

In a heartening initiative aimed at enriching the educational landscape for children in Cincinnati, two local nonprofit organizations, Music Matters and Activities Beyond the Classroom, have joined forces to provide musical instruments to students in need. This collaboration seeks to address the gap in music education, particularly in underserved schools.

Empowering Through Music

Bruce Garfield, the state director of Music Matters Ohio, emphasized the transformative power of music education. He shared personal anecdotes about how music can foster self-esteem, hand-eye coordination, and a sense of unity among students. Garfield, who himself benefited from a donated trumpet during his middle school years, is a testament to the lifelong impact that access to musical instruments can have.

The partnership between Music Matters and Activities Beyond the Classroom was facilitated through a series of connections involving local government and educational leaders, highlighting the community’s commitment to forward-thinking educational programs. Garfield expressed a desire for every community in Ohio to have access to such progressive initiatives.

Community Involvement

The instrument drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, located on Central Parkway. Community members are encouraged to donate instruments that may be gathering dust in attics or basements. The school serves as the main drop-off point, thanks to its connection with a district captain who is also an educator there.

All schools in the Cincinnati area are eligible to benefit from the donations, with a particular focus on those most in need. The initiative aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to explore music, regardless of their school’s budget constraints.

Garfield urged listeners to participate by donating unused instruments, thereby contributing to a cause that not only supports music education but also strengthens the community by fostering creativity and teamwork among young students.
