Tampa burger shop battles inflation as profit margins shrink

Since opening its doors in 2020, TNT Burger has become a staple of Tampa’s food scene, drawing locals with inventive menu items like the “Cheesy Beast” and the novelty “COVID-19 Vaccine Burger,” which is served in a sauce‑filled syringe. Co‑owner Carolina Martinez says the restaurant’s playful approach has earned a passionate following on social media.

Inflation hits the kitchen

“We really started feeling the inflation last year, especially in the food prices,” Martinez explained. The cost of core ingredients—beef, French fries and tomatoes—has risen sharply, and the business also faces higher rent and commercial‑insurance bills. Those pressures forced TNT Burger to shutter its newer South Tampa location, a decision compounded by recent hurricane damage.

National picture mirrors local strain

The challenges faced by TNT Burger reflect a broader pattern across the United States. The National Restaurant Association estimates that total restaurant expenses have jumped 36 percent since 2019, leaving 42 percent of operators unprofitable last year. Martinez notes, “We try to keep our prices affordable to our customers, but at the same time we don’t want to lower our food quality. I know there are families struggling with inflation as well, but our profit margin is getting smaller and smaller, so that’s the biggest challenge facing us right now.”

Community support keeps hope alive

Despite the financial squeeze, Martinez and her husband remain committed to their vision of expanding TNT Burger across the state. “We are here because we truly love what we do,” she said. “To our customers, thank you for continuing to support our small business. I know you have a lot of burger restaurants out there, but you keep showing us love.”

The story underscores how rising costs are affecting small, family‑run eateries in Tampa and beyond, highlighting the need for continued community patronage and thoughtful policy that eases the burden on local entrepreneurs.
