Lakeland’s Worth and Purpose ministry expands services for homeless

In the heart of Lakeland, Florida, the Worth and Purpose ministry is deepening its impact on the city’s homeless population. Founded by former corporate employee Travis Settineri, the ministry began as a street‑outreach effort focused on building genuine relationships with people living on the streets. Settineri left his job to devote his life to the mission, describing the decision as the most fulfilling experience of his life.

Building community through service

The ministry operates out of a colorful building that serves as a hub for volunteers and participants alike. Every Wednesday and Saturday, the center hosts gatherings that draw hundreds of people from across the city. Attendees enjoy an ice‑cream truck, a pizza truck and an on‑site barbershop, providing simple comforts that can make a profound difference.

“A fresh haircut gives me a hand up toward securing a job,” said one participant, echoing the sentiment of many who have found renewed hope through the ministry’s services. By offering tangible resources alongside personal encouragement, Worth and Purpose aims to restore dignity and purpose to those who have been marginalized.

Personal stories of transformation

“He’s the epitome of the love of God in this place in this world,” said Pedro Martinez, a program participant, describing Settineri’s impact. Settineri’s own testimony underscores the ministry’s philosophy: hearing the personal backstories of homeless individuals breaks down judgment and builds lasting community ownership.

“It’s the fruit of saying yes to something crazy and taking a risk,” Settineri said, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of leading the organization.

Documenting the mission

Over the past year, Worth and Purpose has been filming its work, resulting in a full‑length documentary titled “East Main Street.” The film will premiere at the historic Polk Theatre on November 13, offering the broader Lakeland community a glimpse into the ministry’s daily efforts and the lives it touches.

The documentary is expected to inspire additional volunteers and donors, further expanding the ministry’s capacity to serve. Local faith leaders have praised the project, noting its potential to showcase the power of Christian compassion in action.

Looking ahead

Settineri and his team plan to increase the frequency of their weekend gatherings and explore additional services such as job‑readiness workshops and counseling. By continuing to partner with local businesses—like the food trucks and barbershop that already support the ministry—the organization hopes to create a sustainable network of aid that empowers homeless residents to rebuild their lives.

For Lakeland residents seeking to volunteer, donate, or learn more about the upcoming documentary, information is available on the ministry’s website and social media channels.
