Superkhana International Cooks Like It Has Nothing to Prove

The menu at Superkhana International does not explain itself to you. There’s no paragraph about the chef’s grandmother or a glossary of regional Indian cuisines. You get a list of dishes, some familiar, some not, and you figure it out. That confidence is either refreshing or slightly alarming depending on your mood, but either way the food makes the case for it.

Superkhana opened in 2019 on North Kedzie in Logan Square, in a space that feels like it was designed by someone who owns too many good paperbacks — warm lighting, wood, a bar up front that actually functions as a bar. The room fills up fast on weekends; Thursday or early Friday works better if you want to hear yourself think. Reservations are worth making; walk-ins can work at the bar.

The cooking pulls from across the Indian subcontinent and diaspora without trying to be a survey course. Chefs Zeeshan Shah and Yoshi Yamada run a kitchen that swings between comfort and something stranger. The pav — soft rolls with rotating fillings — is the thing that made early reviewers lose their composure, and it still holds up. Order it. The small plates section rewards patience; the kachumber salad sounds like an afterthought until it arrives and you realize you’ve been underestimating cucumbers for most of your adult life.

Mains shift seasonally, but lamb dishes tend to anchor the menu and tend to be the right call. The dal, whatever form it takes that night, is never a cop-out. A recent visit turned up a coconut curry that was rich without being heavy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. The kitchen has a light hand with fat and acid — things are balanced rather than blunt.

Drinks are worth attention. The cocktail list is short and thought through, leaning on spice and citrus in ways that actually pair with the food rather than fighting it. If you’re not drinking, the house lassi is not an afterthought.

Dinner for two with drinks runs somewhere between $80 and $110 before tip, depending on how committed you get to the small plates. It’s not cheap for Logan Square, but it’s not performing expensiveness either — the portions are honest and nothing on the menu feels padded for margin.

The neighborhood context matters a little. Kedzie between Armitage and Fullerton has gotten busier in recent years, and Superkhana sits in a stretch with enough foot traffic that you won’t feel like you’re making a pilgrimage. Street parking is what it is in Logan Square — plan on a couple of passes around the block. The restaurant is accessible and has a small patio that works when the weather cooperates.

What sets the place apart isn’t any single dish. It’s a consistent point of view — food that takes the breadth of South Asian cooking seriously without turning dinner into a lecture. Plenty of Chicago restaurants do Indian cuisine. Fewer do it with this much range and this little anxiety about whether you’re keeping up.

Go hungry, skip the temptation to under-order, and trust the kitchen on the specials.
