Chesapeake Planetarium? No. Try the Ferguson Center Instead

People around here tend to assume the Chesapeake Conference Center is just for corporate retreats and wedding receptions — the kind of place you end up at because someone else booked it. That assumption is basically correct, and yet it undersells what’s actually going on there in ways that matter if you live in the city and pay attention to it.

The Conference Center sits on Civic Center Court, just off Battlefield Boulevard in the Greenbrier area, and it’s genuinely large — over 27,000 square feet of function space, including a ballroom that seats close to 1,500 people. That scale is exactly why Chesapeake’s arts and community organizations keep landing there for events that don’t fit anywhere else in the city. When a touring Broadway production, a regional orchestra performance, or a civic awards night needs a room that actually works, this is usually where they end up.

The surprise isn’t the building itself. It’s what gets scheduled inside it. Throughout the year, the Conference Center hosts public ticketed events — concerts, cultural showcases, holiday programs — that most residents don’t know about until they stumble across a flier or hear about it secondhand. The Chesapeake Jubilee Committee has held events here. Local schools have staged performances here. Regional performing arts groups use the ballroom as a de facto concert hall because it has the capacity they need and the technical infrastructure to support it.

The room, when it’s set up for a live performance, works better than you’d expect from a convention venue. Sight lines from the floor are decent. The sound reinforcement is competent. It’s not the Chrysler Hall experience across the water in Norfolk, but it’s also not asking you to drive over the bridge and pay for parking on the other side. For a city Chesapeake’s size, having a room this large that can swing between a corporate expo and a community concert with reasonable results is not nothing.

Ticket prices vary entirely depending on the event — a school showcase might be free, a touring act might run $30 to $60. The easiest way to know what’s coming through is to check the City of Chesapeake’s events calendar, since the Conference Center doesn’t maintain a single unified public schedule in one obvious place. That’s a minor frustration. Worth knowing before you assume nothing is happening there.

Parking is free and plentiful, which in the Hampton Roads metro is not the small thing it sounds like. The venue is about as easy to get in and out of as anything in Greenbrier, and the surrounding area has enough dining options nearby that dinner-before makes sense if you plan ahead.

The honest pitch for the Chesapeake Conference Center is this: it functions as the city’s de facto large performance and civic gathering space whether or not it markets itself that way, and once or twice a year something genuinely worth going to shows up on its calendar. The trick is knowing to look.
