Spearfish, S.D. – A proud son of the Black Hills has taken the next step in a distinguished Navy career. Capt. Jedidiah Kloppel, a native of Spearfish, formally transferred command of Maritime Expeditionary Security Group 1 (MESG‑1) to Capt. Mark Gillaspie during a ceremony on Oct. 29 at Naval Base Coronado, California.
From Spearfish to the Pacific
Kloppel assumed leadership of MESG‑1 in May 2025. During his tenure he oversaw efforts to improve military readiness, modernize equipment, and strengthen training and support for sailors. Under his guidance the unit continued its vital mission of protecting ports, harbors, coastal infrastructure, and critical naval assets worldwide.
New assignment in San Diego
After more than a year at the helm, Capt. Kloppel will remain in Southern California, stepping into the role of chief of staff for Expeditionary Strike Group 3, based in San Diego. The position will have him coordinating the strike group’s operational planning and supporting the sailors who execute the Navy’s expeditionary missions.
Continuity of leadership
Capt. Mark Gillaspie, who previously served as MESG‑1’s deputy commander, will now lead the group. He said his priorities include keeping sailors ready for missions and supporting the people who carry them out. The seamless transition reflects the Navy’s commitment to steady, capable leadership.
Why this matters to South Dakota
While the ceremony took place on the West Coast, the story resonates back home. Spearfish families take pride in seeing one of their own rise through the ranks of the nation’s armed forces. The achievement underscores the values of service, duty, and family that are central to our community.
Local veterans groups and civic organizations have already begun planning a welcome‑home celebration for Capt. Kloppel when he returns to the Black Hills. The event will give residents a chance to thank him for his dedication and to hear firsthand about the important work of the Navy’s expeditionary forces.
MESG‑1 remains a key component of the Navy’s Maritime Expeditionary Security Force, a global network that safeguards America’s maritime interests. With Capt. Gillaspie at the helm and Capt. Kloppel moving to a strategic staff role, the unit is well positioned to continue its mission of protecting our nation’s ports and coastal infrastructure.
