A recent survey of 2,000 Americans found that 30% of movie enthusiasts believe the summer blockbuster is bigger than ever before. However, 21% feel that there are too many sequels and remakes, while 11% think the summer blockbuster is officially dead and prefer to stream at home.
Generational Differences
Millennials are the biggest fans of summer blockbusters, with 37% deeming them alive and well, followed by Gen Z at 35%. Enthusiasm for summer movies declines with age, with 30% of Gen X and 20% of baby boomers sharing the same enthusiasm.
When it comes to watching new movies, 17% of respondents prefer to catch them on opening weekend in the movie theater, while 21% prefer to wait a few weeks. Theater attendance declines with age, with 56% of Gen Z preferring the big screen versus 19% of baby boomers.
The survey also found that 34% of respondents prefer to stream movies at home whenever they become available. The top five most anticipated movies of the summer are Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Minions and Monsters, and Supergirl.
