SiriusXM host Stephen A. Smith addressed his recent back-and-forth with President Donald Trump during a Sunday appearance on “State of the Union,” while also shutting down any possibility of a future run for vice president.
Smith’s Measured Approach
Speaking with guest host Kasie Hunt, the sports commentator discussed recent remarks from President Trump. The president previously criticized Smith after the host claimed that Trump fell asleep during Game Three of the NBA Finals in New York City. When asked about Trump’s recent comments suggesting that a “high IQ” is required to be president, Smith took a measured approach.
“But I’m not here to denigrate or insult the president of the United States in that regard. He is certainly an upgrade from what we were seeing from Joe Biden in terms of his alertness and what have you. I certainly would say that,” Smith said. “I would not accuse him of that. But I’m not going to insult the president.”
Smith also expressed a willingness to sit down directly with President Trump to debate political issues. He told Hunt that if someone wanted to seriously question his intelligence, they could put him at the same table as the president for a public discussion about decisions made on behalf of the American people, adding, “And we will see where my I.Q. lands then.”
No Vice Presidential Run
The conversation then shifted to Smith’s own potential political future. When Hunt asked if he would ever accept an offer to join a political ticket as vice president, Smith quickly cut her off.
“Never, never. Never. I’m not interested in being no vice president. I’m not interested in being number two,” Smith said. “I’m not interested in being the head of the Senate just to break a tie or to give speeches. No. If I were to do something like that, it would be for the big job. It would be for the presidency of the United States of America or nothing. I’m not trying to be number two at anything I do.”
