The NBA offseason has begun, and all eyes are on the future of the league. The New York Knicks will be celebrating their championship win with a parade in Manhattan.
NBA Parity
The Knicks’ win continues the trend of different teams winning championships each year. In the last eight seasons, eight different franchises have won championships, including the Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and now the New York Knicks.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, ‘To me, it just really speaks to the state of NBA basketball and the state of the future of the game. And now with this draft class coming in this year — again, not just the first pick, but a draft that’s considered the deepest in many years — there’s so much talent everywhere. … So, it’s a really bright future ahead for the league.’
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Future
One of the biggest questions of the offseason is what will happen to Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks star will be eligible for an extension worth up to $275 million this fall. However, the Bucks may consider trading him to start over with new players and draft picks.
Other teams, such as the Miami Heat, have been mentioned as potential suitors for Antetokounmpo. The Bucks’ decision on what to do with Antetokounmpo will likely be made before the draft, so they can target specific players with the assets they receive in a potential trade.
LeBron James’ Future
LeBron James is also a major question mark this offseason. He has never had this much freedom in the summer, and it’s unclear what he will decide to do. He could stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, sign with another team, retire, or demand a max salary.
The Lakers have other decisions to make, including how to handle an extension for Austin Reaves. However, getting some sense from James about his plans will help the team make other moves.
Other Offseason Issues
Other teams have their own issues to address this offseason. The Washington Wizards have the number one pick in the draft, and it’s unclear what they will do with it. The Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, and Portland Trail Blazers all need to hire new coaches.
The San Antonio Spurs are looking to build on their successful season, and they will try to re-sign Victor Wembanyama to a four-year extension worth over $250 million.
