Travelers heading to Des Moines International Airport should expect traffic changes and possible delays beginning Monday as construction continues on the airport’s new terminal project.
Construction Details
The airport says portions of both the passenger and commercial curbs will be reduced to a single lane for about two weeks while crews remove the existing median in front of the current terminal. Officials say the work is needed to prepare for a future roadway connection serving the new terminal.
Airport leaders are encouraging passengers to allow extra travel time, especially during peak travel periods. Beginning Monday, a portion of Frontage Road between the Blue Parking Lot and the Cell Phone Waiting Lot will also close for approximately two months.
The airport says the closure will allow crews to prepare the area for future construction activities associated with the current baggage claim building. Both lots will remain open and accessible. Drivers picking up passengers are encouraged to use the airport’s free EZ-PICKUP program in the parking garage to help reduce curbside congestion.
The airport says the current baggage claim building will remain in place. Once the new terminal opens, baggage claim operations will move to the new facility, and the existing building will be repurposed for airport administration and operations offices.
