Step Into the Story: A Night at the Molly Brown House Museum’s Candlelight Tours

Tucked into the Sunnyside neighborhood on the northwest edge of Denver, Ratio Beerworks has long been — wait, let me start over. The place I want to tell you about sits at the corner of ambition and hospitality, and it goes by the name Cart-Driver — a beloved RiNo pizza and natural wine destination that has quietly become one of the most satisfying dinner stops in the entire city.

RiNo, short for River North Art District, is Denver’s most kinetic neighborhood. Murals climb the sides of warehouses, galleries spill onto sidewalks, and the smell of something wood-fired is almost always drifting through the air. Cart-Driver fits right in. The building is industrial in the best possible way — exposed brick, high ceilings, warm Edison lighting — but it never feels cold or cavernous. Settle into a seat near the open kitchen and you’ll feel the heat of the wood-burning oven from across the room, which is exactly the kind of reassurance you want when you’re about to order pizza.

And order pizza you should. Cart-Driver’s pies are Neapolitan-inspired but unafraid to go their own direction. The dough is fermented long enough to develop real depth of flavor, and the char on the crust has that faint bitterness that makes every bite interesting. The Funghi — topped with roasted mushrooms, fontina, and a drizzle of truffle oil — has become something of a signature, and after one taste it’s easy to understand why. But the rotating seasonal offerings are where the kitchen shows its personality. On a recent visit, a spring pie arrived with ramps, house-made ricotta, and a scattering of crispy capers that somehow pulled the whole thing together. It was restrained and bold at the same time, which is a hard trick to pull off.

The natural wine list deserves its own paragraph. Cart-Driver takes its wine program seriously without taking itself too seriously about it — the staff is knowledgeable but never condescending, and they genuinely seem to enjoy steering you toward something unexpected. The list skews toward small producers from Italy, France, and the American West, with enough variety to satisfy a committed orange wine devotee or a guest who just wants something cold and delicious with their pepperoni. Either way, you’ll leave having discovered something.

If you’re going on a weekend, arrive early or put your name in and take a walk through the neighborhood while you wait. RiNo rewards wandering. There’s always a new mural to find, a pop-up to stumble into, or a bench outside a coffee shop that’s too good to pass up. By the time your table is ready, you’ll have worked up an appetite and a genuine appreciation for the block Cart-Driver calls home.

The dessert situation is simple and correct: a small rotating selection that usually includes something chocolate and something seasonal. Don’t skip it. The kitchen applies the same care to a chocolate budino as it does to the main event, and finishing a meal here on a sweet note feels like the evening asking you to slow down just a little longer.

Cart-Driver is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday, with weekend lunch service that draws a loyal crowd of locals who clearly know something. Reservations are available and worth making, though the bar seats are first-come and always lively. It’s located at 2500 Larimer Street — right in the thick of RiNo, easy to find, impossible to forget.

Denver has no shortage of good pizza. Cart-Driver is something more than that. It’s the kind of restaurant that reminds you why going out to eat still matters — the warmth of a room doing exactly what it set out to do, with food that earns your full attention and wine that makes the conversation better. Go soon, and go hungry.
