Ladera Ranch families push for environmental review after rare pediatric cancer cluster

Residents of the planned community of Ladera Ranch in Orange County are rallying for answers after at least six children were diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, an exceptionally rare bone and soft‑tissue cancer that typically affects adolescents and young adults.

Local families voice concern

Following the July 2026 death of 17‑year‑old Brody Matteson from complications of treatment, families gathered at community meetings and called for a thorough look at local environmental factors. “We don’t have a clear line of evidence for pesticides, but it is one of the things that concerns us,” said Dustin Matteson, the boy’s father, speaking to NBC Los Angeles.

Health officials’ response

Dr. Janet Yoon, a pediatric oncologist and sarcoma specialist at City of Hope, told Fox News Digital that any geographic clustering of such a rare disease naturally raises concerns and warrants investigation. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) conducted a county‑wide review in 2024 but found no unusual pattern, noting that the data at the time were limited. A second, more focused review of cancer incidence in Ladera Ranch is now under way, with CDPH estimating completion in fall 2026.

Environmental sampling begins

On Sept. 14, researchers from California State University, Fullerton began collecting soil and water samples from local parks. Lead researcher Jennifer Piazza explained that the team will test for heavy metals such as arsenic and lead, as well as pesticide residues. “Environmental sampling is the first step of our larger, ongoing scientific investigation,” she said, adding that findings will not automatically imply causality for the pediatric cases.

HOA actions and community cooperation

The Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (LARMAC), the master homeowners association, temporarily paused use of certain landscape chemicals and formed an advisory committee to review its practices. In a statement to People Magazine, LARMAC expressed “heartfelt compassion” for affected families and noted that it has reduced synthetic pesticide use, switching to organic alternatives while cooperating with state agencies.

Medical perspective

Dr. Yoon emphasized that no confirmed genetic or environmental cause for Ewing sarcoma has been identified. While some studies link high‑level occupational pesticide exposure to increased cancer risk, the American Cancer Society notes that no lifestyle‑related or environmental factor has been proven for this specific disease. She urged parents to seek medical evaluation for persistent, worsening pain that interferes with daily activities, as early diagnosis improves outcomes.

Next steps

The investigation remains ongoing. CDPH, CalEPA and local officials have not identified any immediate environmental hazards, but they continue to monitor data and will release results of the soil and water testing by the end of the year. Families hope the scientific findings will guide future safety measures and provide peace of mind.
