St. Lucie County fire district faces questions over hazing investigation transparency

During a Wednesday night meeting of the St. Lucie County Fire District, community members and five former firefighters pressed district officials for greater transparency in the hazing investigation that led to disciplinary action.

Firefighter Jordon Hutchinson, one of the terminated employees, told the board, “Even after being fired, we’re still here today trying to fix the process.” He and the other four former firefighters argued that the independent investigation was limited and that key allegations were either reviewed only internally or omitted from the final report.

The district’s investigation, commissioned after videos surfaced showing what appeared to be electric shocks being administered to newer employees, resulted in the termination of three firefighters and disciplinary measures against two others. The former employees now contend that the disciplinary action is retaliation for complaints they filed against district leadership.

Residents at the meeting echoed concerns about the scope of the inquiry. One attendee asked the board to “respectfully bring these firefighters home,” emphasizing the need for a full and impartial review. Several community members suggested that the investigation’s findings were incomplete and called for an independent, public audit of the process.

Board members considered a motion to suspend the district chief and the district attorney, but the motion failed with a 4‑1 vote. The dissenting vote reflected lingering tension between the district’s leadership and those who feel the investigation was insufficiently thorough.

Following the meeting, the dispute has moved to arbitration, where an independent arbitrator will review the disciplinary actions and the procedural concerns raised by the former firefighters and community members.

St. Lucie County officials have not yet indicated whether they will reopen the investigation or commission a new, fully independent review. The fire district’s next public meeting is scheduled for next month, where the arbitration outcome and any further steps will be discussed.

Key points from the meeting

  • Five firefighters disciplined after an independent investigation into alleged hazing.
  • Video evidence suggested electric shocks were used on newer employees.
  • Three firefighters terminated; two received other disciplinary measures.
  • Former firefighters claim retaliation for filing complaints against leadership.
  • Residents called for a more comprehensive, transparent investigation.
  • Motion to suspend district chief and attorney failed 4‑1.
  • Dispute now in arbitration; next public meeting slated for next month.

The outcome of the arbitration could set a precedent for how fire districts and other public‑safety agencies handle internal misconduct allegations, balancing accountability with due process for employees.
