St. Lucie County Fire District Board Discusses Hazing Claims, Leadership Suspension

At a two‑hour meeting on Friday, the St. Lucie County Fire District board confronted a controversy that has divided the department and its leadership. Video released by the district showed several firefighters delivering electric shocks to newer crew members, a practice the district described as hazing.

Terminations and suspensions

Following the video’s release, the board voted to terminate three firefighters. Two of those terminated, Chris Baldwin and Jordon Hutchinson, used the public session to argue that the incident was not hazing but an effort to promote inclusion. Both men insisted that no one was injured or forced to participate.

In addition to the terminations, two other firefighters were placed on suspension pending further investigation. The board’s discussion also turned to the district’s top officials. Commissioners moved to suspend Fire Chief John Doe (name withheld in source) and the district attorney, alleging possible retaliation against Baldwin and Hutchinson. The motion failed, with four of the six commissioners voting against it.

Board’s next steps

After extensive debate, commissioners approved a motion to continue the discussion at the next board meeting scheduled for September. The continuation will allow for additional testimony, review of the video evidence, and consideration of any disciplinary actions against senior leadership.

Local residents and fire‑department families have expressed concern over the allegations. Some parents of younger firefighters worry about the safety and morale of their children in a profession that already demands significant risk. Others emphasize the importance of maintaining a disciplined, respectful workplace while upholding the constitutional right of individuals to due process.

Context and community impact

The fire district serves a broad area of St. Lucie County, providing emergency response, fire suppression, and rescue services to thousands of households. Any disruption to its leadership or internal cohesion can affect response times and public confidence.

Board members noted that the district remains committed to transparency and to safeguarding both its personnel and the community it serves. They urged residents to stay informed as the investigation proceeds and to trust that appropriate measures will be taken to address any misconduct while protecting the rights of all involved.

For now, the board’s focus remains on gathering facts, ensuring accountability, and preserving the essential services that St. Lucie County residents rely on daily.
