Bellarmine freshmen launch Knights in Action service project across Louisville

Bellarmine University welcomed its newest class of students with a hands‑on community‑service effort on Wednesday, reinforcing the school’s long‑standing commitment to Louisville neighborhoods. The event, part of the annual Knights in Action program, drew almost 700 incoming freshmen who spread out across the city to clean up public spaces.

Students roll up sleeves at Waterfront Park

At Waterfront Park, a popular riverfront destination, Bellarmine students from the Louisville area and from other states teamed up to collect litter, remove debris and tidy the park’s pathways. The effort not only improved the park’s appearance but also gave the newcomers a chance to connect with the community they will call home for the next four years.

University leaders stress the value of service

Academic advisor Abby Lancaster highlighted the importance of the project, saying, “Seeing our students serve the community I grew up in helps them build ties to Louisville while also welcoming those who are new to the city.” She added that the service day is designed to bridge the gap between students who already have local roots and those arriving from elsewhere.

“Getting them connected with the Bellarmine community and with Louisville as a whole has been really great to see,” Lancaster said, noting that the service experience sets a tone for the upcoming semester.

Knights in Action marks a milestone

This year’s service day marked the 16th anniversary of Knights in Action, a signature component of Bellarmine’s Week of Welcome. The program has grown each year, reflecting the university’s emphasis on civic responsibility and the belief that students should be active participants in the neighborhoods that host them.

Classes for the incoming cohort begin the following day, and many students expressed excitement about the semester ahead, citing the service project as a meaningful introduction to campus life.

Looking ahead

Bellarmine’s commitment to community service aligns with broader efforts across Louisville to encourage volunteerism and stewardship of public spaces. As the city continues to develop its riverfront and park system, partnerships with local institutions like Bellarmine are expected to play a vital role in maintaining clean, welcoming environments for residents and visitors alike.
