Kosair for Kids donates $2 million to expand Louisville NICU to 26 beds

Louisville – Baptist Health Louisville announced Wednesday that its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will grow from 15 to 26 beds by late next year, thanks to a $2 million donation from the charitable organization Kosair for Kids.

Donation and naming ceremony

The hospital and Kosair for Kids unveiled new signage that formally names the NICU after the children’s charity. The ceremony highlighted the partnership between the health system and the nonprofit, which has long supported pediatric health initiatives throughout Kentucky.

Impact on families and newborns

Level‑three NICU care provides the most advanced support for vulnerable newborns, including those born prematurely or with serious medical conditions. Expanding the unit adds 11 additional beds, allowing more families to keep their infants close to home during critical treatment periods.

Barry Dunn, president and CEO of Kosair for Kids, said, “We are proud to say that the nurses and the doctors here at Baptist Health are fantastic at helping kids get that healthy start, to get out of the blocks quickly. Not every child starts life as healthy as we would like, and that’s why places like this are necessary. They’re not optional. They’re necessary.”

Community response

Local parents and community leaders praised the expansion, noting that the additional capacity will reduce the need for families to travel out of state for specialized neonatal care. The NICU’s growth aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Louisville’s health infrastructure and keep families together during the most vulnerable moments of a child’s life.

“Having a top‑tier NICU right here in Louisville means our children can receive world‑class care without the stress of long-distance travel,” said a Louisville resident who recently welcomed a newborn.

Future outlook

The expanded NICU is slated to be fully operational by the end of 2027. Baptist Health plans to staff the new beds with additional neonatal nurses and physicians, ensuring that the unit meets the rigorous standards required for level‑three care.

Both Baptist Health and Kosair for Kids view the donation as a long‑term investment in the health of Kentucky’s youngest citizens, reinforcing the importance of community‑based medical resources and the role of charitable giving in supporting essential health services.
