Hawk Watch, Wildflowers, and a View That Will Stop You in Your Tracks: Lake Leatherwood’s Lesser-Known Cousin

There is a moment, about halfway up the ridge trail at Lake Fort Smith State Park’s scenic corridor near Springdale, when the tree canopy opens just enough to hand you a view that feels almost unearned. The lake spreads below you in long silver ribbons, herons lift off the shallows in slow, prehistoric arcs, and for a second you forget entirely that you drove here in under an hour from the city. That moment, right there, is why I keep coming back.

Lake Fort Smith State Park sits along the Boston Mountains of the Ozark National Forest, and while the main park entrance is technically in Mountainburg, the drive from Springdale along Highway 71 is part of the experience. This is not a passive Sunday drive — the route winds through hollows and ridgelines that shift color with every season, and by the time you arrive you already feel like you have crossed into a different world. It is the kind of place that recalibrates you.

The park itself offers something genuinely rare in northwest Arkansas: solitude paired with real infrastructure. The campground is clean and well-maintained, with both tent sites and full-hookup RV spots, but what draws me back repeatedly is the trail system. The Shepherd Springs Loop is my personal favorite — a moderate 2.3-mile circuit that passes through old-growth hardwood forest, dips to a cold creek crossing, and climbs to those ridge views I mentioned. Spring brings trillium and mayapple carpeting the forest floor. Fall turns the whole hillside into something you would expect to see on a postcard from Vermont.

Birdwatchers, take note. The lake and its surrounding forest corridors make this one of the more productive hawk-watching spots in the Arkansas Ozarks during fall migration. Broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, and the occasional golden eagle funnel through this region in October, and a pair of binoculars is all you need to feel like you are witnessing something genuinely wild.

Fishing is excellent here too. Lake Fort Smith is stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie, and the boat ramp is uncrowded compared to the busier recreational lakes in the region. Canoe and kayak launches are easy and the coves stay calm even on breezy afternoons.

Pack a picnic. The lakeside pavilion area is shaded, breezy, and almost always quieter than you expect. Bring a book if you like, but honestly the view does most of the entertainment.

If you live in Springdale and you have not yet made this drive, you are sitting on one of the most accessible wild escapes in the entire region. Set aside a full morning, leave the podcast at home, and let the Ozarks do what they do best.
