St. Cloud Begins $280K Upgrade of Lakefront Park Marina Dock

St. Cloud officials broke ground this week on a major improvement to the Lakefront Park Marina. Crews have begun tearing down the old wooden floating dock, which many residents said had become unsafe after years of use.

Community safety and family access at the forefront

Long‑time resident Jerrod Willett recalled his first experience on the deteriorating structure: “The first time I ever walked on it, it tilted to the right just a little bit.” He warned that the dock’s condition posed a real danger, adding, “Someone could have fallen in a few times the way it was.” Willett expressed confidence that the new dock will eliminate that risk and provide a better fishing platform.

Other locals echoed the sentiment. Suzette Deans described the former dock as “essentially a ramp with a small chain,” noting that parents had to be especially vigilant around the water. “Definitely a little more cautious with the kids, but now that they are doing this, it’s good,” she said.

For families who frequent the marina, the upgrade is welcome news. “I love it,” said Tabitha Melendez, who often visits with her toddler. “It will be a great investment for the community.” She added, “I am really excited. I feel like it will be great for the community to come out and see it.”

Project details and funding

The new dock will be 175 feet long and constructed of aluminum, a material chosen for its durability and low maintenance. A 42‑inch‑high guardrail will run the length of the dock, providing an added safety measure for anglers and boaters alike.

The city has allocated approximately $280,000 for the project, drawing the funds from the Parks and Recreation Department budget. City officials described the work as part of routine maintenance and upkeep at the lakefront, emphasizing the marina’s importance to local recreation and tourism.

According to municipal representatives, the marina sees significant boat traffic throughout the season, making the upgrade essential for both safety and continued enjoyment of the waterfront.

Construction timeline

Construction is slated to continue through the end of September, with the city promising minimal disruption to marina users. Officials encouraged residents to stay informed about any temporary access changes and thanked the community for its patience during the improvement period.

The upgraded dock is expected to enhance the overall lakefront experience, offering a safer, more attractive space for fishing, boating, and family outings. As the project progresses, city leaders remain committed to delivering a high‑quality public amenity that supports the traditions of family recreation and community pride.
