Signs have been posted at high-traffic intersections in Springfield, encouraging residents to support local organizations rather than giving to panhandlers. The ‘Help Starts Here’ initiative, spearheaded by Councilwoman Callie Carrol, aims to raise awareness about local services available to those in need and reduce cash donations at intersections.
Program Goals
The program’s stated goals include increasing donations to local service providers, which can provide more lasting help than direct cash donations. According to United Way Ozarks Region President and CEO Brandi Van Antwerp, ‘When we can instead donate to a nonprofit whose mission is to help folks in need, we’re able to stretch those dollars further.’ Jason Hynson, executive director of Victory Mission, added that cash donations on street corners can sometimes prevent individuals from seeking more lasting help.
The initiative is a partnership between the city of Springfield, the Community Partnership of the Ozarks, Crosslines Community Outreach, Victory Mission, and United Way Ozarks. More information about the program can be found on the city’s website.
Some residents have expressed mixed reactions to the initiative, with some applauding the efforts and others stating their intent to continue giving to people at intersections.
