Springfield Community Faces Deportation Concerns

Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are making plans for their children due to concerns about deportation as the temporary protected status for Haitians comes to an end. Approximately 12,000 Haitians live in Springfield, and many have strong ties to the community, with jobs, homes, and U.S.-born children.

Community Impact

Marjory Wentworth, a Haitian advocate and member of the G92 faith group, expressed worry about the impact a mass exodus of Haitians could have on Springfield. “People’s lives have intersected with the immigration, immigrant community in just endless ways,” Wentworth said. “I think it’s going to leave a hole that can’t be filled.”

Many Haitian families in Springfield include U.S.-born children or relatives with different immigration statuses. Wentworth emphasized that it’s not a simple thing for these families to just pick up and leave, as many came to the United States because their lives were in danger in Haiti.

Temporary Protected Status

The Trump administration has stated that temporary protected status was created to provide temporary protection, not a permanent solution. However, the definition of “getting better” remains unclear, as the U.S. State Department continues to warn against travel to Haiti due to safety concerns.

Advocates like Wentworth are urging Haitian families in Springfield to prepare for potential immigration enforcement, particularly by making plans for their children.
