The Springfield Cardinals are set to celebrate a cherished Ozarks tradition by introducing their new alternate identity, the Ozarks Snipe Hunters, during their upcoming homestand against Amarillo at Route 66 Stadium. This playful nod to the local folklore of snipe hunting will debut on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
Snipe hunting, often a humorous initiation for newcomers to the Ozarks, involves leading an unsuspecting participant into the wilderness with the promise of capturing the elusive ‘snipe.’ While the snipe is a fictional creature in this context, the term also refers to a real migratory bird known for its long beak and rapid flight.
The Snipe Hunters will take the field on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights this week, with additional appearances scheduled for June 25, June 30, and August 11. This new identity joins the Springfield Cashew Chickens, another alternate identity that debuted a couple of years ago for select home games.
Cardinals Return Home After Road Trip
The Springfield Cardinals return home after a challenging 2-4 road trip to Frisco, which concluded with two losses in a Sunday doubleheader. The team currently holds a 25-31 record, placing them fourth in the Texas League North.
Spotlight on Left-Handed Pitching Prospects
Left-handed pitching prospects in the Cardinals’ organization have been making headlines. Liam Doyle, the top prospect and a first-round 2025 draft pick, secured his first professional victory on June 4, allowing two runs over five innings. Doyle is set to start the Wednesday morning game.
At Triple-A Memphis, Quinn Mathews delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one hit over six innings with nine strikeouts. Meanwhile, Cooper Hjerpe, another promising lefty, made a successful return to the mound after an 11-month hiatus.
New Faces Making an Impact
Recently promoted players from High-A Peoria are already making their presence felt in Springfield. Infielder Miguel Villaroel has started strong with a 7-for-20 performance, including a home run, while outfielder Jose Cordoba has hit two home runs and stolen two bases in his first four games.
