Spanish National on Cruise Ship Tests Positive for Hantavirus

A Spanish citizen who was evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship has tested positive for hantavirus, as confirmed by Spain’s Ministry of Health. The individual is currently in isolation at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid, where they have been since May 10.

Health Measures in Place

The patient is among 14 Spaniards who were aboard the MV Hondius and have been quarantined as a precautionary measure. Authorities identified the patient as a close contact through the epidemiological monitoring system activated following the initial detection of the outbreak on the ship.

Upon confirmation of the hantavirus case, the patient was moved to the hospital’s High-Level Isolation Unit (UATAN) to ensure specialized medical supervision and adherence to biosafety protocols. This marks the second confirmed case of hantavirus among the Spanish passengers and crew members from the vessel.

Public Reassurance

The Ministry of Health has reassured the public that the case was detected within the existing isolation and control framework, indicating that there is no increased risk to the general population. The current epidemiological response measures remain unchanged.

This situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
