Spanish Citizen on Cruise Ship Tests Positive for Hantavirus

A Spanish citizen who was evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship has tested positive for hantavirus, according to Spain’s Ministry of Health. The individual is currently in isolation at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid.

Quarantine Measures in Place

The patient is among 14 Spaniards who were aboard the MV Hondius and have been in quarantine since May 10. Authorities identified the patient as a close contact through epidemiological monitoring activated after the outbreak was initially detected on the ship.

Following the confirmation of the hantavirus case, the patient was moved to the hospital’s High-Level Isolation Unit, where they will receive specialized medical care under strict biosafety protocols.

Public Reassurance

This case marks the second hantavirus positive among the Spanish passengers and crew of the vessel. Despite this, the Ministry of Health has reassured the public that the case was detected within the existing isolation and control systems. Therefore, it does not increase the risk level for the general population nor does it alter the current epidemiological response measures.

The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
