SpaceX is working to recover its Starship prototype, which splashed down in the Indian Ocean after a test flight. The company did not expect to recover the vehicle, but it remained airtight and floated in the ocean.
Recovery Efforts
SpaceX has deployed several ships, including the Go Australis, Normand Ranger, and Skimmer Tide, to recover the Starship. Satellite images show a small boat deployed next to the Starship with a line attached to its nose.
The recovery is a crucial step in SpaceX’s plans to develop a reusable launch system. The company aims to use the Starship to send astronauts to the moon and eventually to Mars.
SpaceX has been testing the Starship prototype, known as Ship 40, since July 24. The vehicle has shown significant improvement over its predecessors, retaining the function of all six engines and making a controlled landing in the ocean.
