Where the Elk Roam and the Stars Come Out: An Evening at Jackson Hole Stargazing with the Teton Science Schools

There is a moment, somewhere around 9 p.m. on a clear autumn night in Jackson Hole, when the last band of orange fades behind the Tetons and the sky above you simply explodes. I am not using that word loosely. Standing in a dark meadow just outside of Kelly, Wyoming, with a Teton Science Schools naturalist guide pointing a green laser at constellations overhead, I genuinely felt like the ground had dropped away beneath me. That is what a truly dark sky does to a person — it resets something.

Teton Science Schools has been rooted in this valley since 1967, and their Wildlife Expeditions branch runs one of the most thoughtful and genuinely immersive stargazing programs in the American West. This is not a gimmick or a casual telescope-by-the-roadside setup. The Night Sky programs are led by trained naturalists who weave together astronomy, ecology, and the deep human history of this landscape into an evening that feels more like a great dinner party conversation than a lecture.

The departure point for most programs is the TSS Kelly Campus, tucked into the sage flats on the eastern edge of Grand Teton National Park near the Gros Ventre River corridor. Getting there from the Jackson Town Square takes about fifteen minutes — a straight shot up Highway 191 and then east toward Kelly. The drive itself, especially at dusk, often rewards you with pronghorn grazing roadside and the occasional great horned owl perched on a fence post.

Once you arrive and the introductions are made, guides set up high-quality telescopes and lead the group through the naked-eye sky first. They talk about the Milky Way not as a distant abstraction but as the actual galaxy you are sitting inside — and somehow, out here, that is easy to believe. On the night I visited, we traced the Summer Triangle, found the Andromeda Galaxy with our own eyes, and listened to our guide describe how Indigenous peoples of this region used star patterns to mark seasonal migrations. It layered beautifully on top of everything else the valley had already given me that day.

Programs typically run two to three hours, and the group sizes are intentionally kept small — usually no more than eight to twelve guests — so you never feel rushed or lost in a crowd. Dress warmly regardless of the season; temperatures in this valley drop fast after sunset even in July, and by September you will want a serious jacket and gloves. TSS thoughtfully reminds you of this when you book, which is a small detail that says a lot about how they operate.

Reservations are required and can be made directly through the Teton Science Schools website. Pricing is reasonable for a private-caliber experience, and proceeds support TSS’s broader mission of place-based education for students across the region. So you are not just treating yourself — you are contributing to something that matters.

If you are planning a trip to Jackson Hole and you want one evening that stands apart from the hiking and the restaurants and the lift rides, this is it. The Tetons are magnificent in daylight. At night, under a sky like that, they become something else entirely — something that stays with you long after you have driven back down into town and checked into your hotel and turned off the lamp. Book it early, dress for the cold, and look up.
