South Downtown Revitalization

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, South Downtown Atlanta is undergoing a significant transformation. SoDo Atlanta, LLC, the company behind the changes, is reimagining and refreshing 58 buildings across 16 acres in the area. The goal is to create a unique and vibrant community that showcases the best of Atlanta.

Local Businesses Thrive

Village Books, CRATES record shop, and El Tesoro restaurant are just a few of the new locations that have opened in the area. These businesses, along with existing ones like Tyde Tate Kitchen and Spiller Park Coffee, are helping to create a thriving community. The area is also home to the legendary Friedman’s Shoes and the recently relocated Bottle Rocket restaurant.

According to April Stammel, who oversees leasing for South Downtown, the focus is on attracting unique, boutique, and local businesses that offer an experience that feels very Atlanta. The area’s historic architecture, connection to transit, and proximity to government and education institutions make it an ideal location for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The resurgence of the area is not limited to new businesses. Atlanta Tech Village, a hub for entrepreneurs and startups, has opened a second location in South Downtown, injecting a new wave of enthusiasm into the neighborhood. The area is also experiencing a surge in interest, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup and other major events expected to draw large crowds.

A Catalyst for Community

The team at SoDo Atlanta believes that the mix of commercial businesses and location can be a catalyst for a unique nexus of Atlanta social groups. The area’s proximity to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Centennial Yards, and The CTR (formerly the CNN Center) makes it an ideal location for sports fans and visitors. As more people discover and rediscover the area, the community is expected to continue to grow and thrive.
