Shuggie’s, a beloved pizza and wine spot in the Mission District, announced that it will close its doors on July 11. The restaurant, which opened in 2022, was known for its unique concept of using discarded food scraps to create its menu items.
Awards and Accolades
Despite its initial success and numerous awards, including being named one of the best new restaurants in America by Esquire magazine, Shuggie’s was unable to sustain a loyal customer base. The restaurant’s owners, David Murphy and Kayla Abe, attempted to revamp the menu and offerings, but ultimately decided to close the business.
Shuggie’s was also recognized for its live music performances and unique design, featuring a bright yellow and sparkly green interior with banana-yellow furniture and a disco ball. The restaurant collaborated with the nonprofit Jazz in the Neighborhood to bring live music to the venue.
The closure of Shuggie’s is a loss for the local community, which had come to appreciate the restaurant’s creative approach to food and its commitment to reducing waste. As the owners stated in their announcement, ‘We are so grateful for your love and care over the past four years … Thank you for being incredible advocates of small business, local culture, and environmentalism.’
