Shirley MacLaine greets Southampton Playhouse audience ahead of Sweet Charity screening

Long Island – The Southampton Playhouse posted a short Instagram video this week featuring legendary actress Shirley MacLaine, who starred in the 1969 film Sweet Charity. In the clip, the 92‑year‑old star sends her best wishes to the theater’s patrons ahead of the August 25 screening of the movie.

“Wish I could be with you,” MacLaine says, adding, “I would like to see ‘Sweet Charity’ again. And while you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked.” She then whispers, “And between you and me, it didn’t do very well, so I hope you guys like it,” before blowing a kiss and signing off with “Much love.”

Local fans respond with affection

Comments on the Playhouse’s post quickly filled with admiration. One viewer wrote, “Oh, Shirley. I love you. What an incredible human being,” while another recalled first seeing her on the big screen in 1969. A third fan simply praised “the greatest legs in showbiz.”

Historical context of the film

Sweet Charity marked choreographer Bob Fosse’s directorial debut. Despite its artistic ambition, the musical flopped at the box office, earning only about $4 million domestically against a $20 million budget, according to Turner Classic Movies. The disappointment slowed the industry’s willingness to finance large‑scale movie musicals for a period.

Fosse’s next effort, Cabaret (1972) starring Liza Minelli, proved a major success and helped revive the genre.

MacLaine’s career highlights

MacLaine’s career spans Broadway, Hollywood, and television. She began dancing in New York as a teenager, later appearing in the Broadway hit The Pajama Game before being cast by Alfred Hitchcock in The Trouble with Harry (1955). She earned an Academy Award nomination for Some Came Running (1958) and won Best Actress for Terms of Endearment (1983).

In recent years she has remained active in the entertainment community. Earlier this year she was spotted in Los Angeles, and in December she accepted a lifetime‑achievement award at the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Personal reflections

During a 2024 interview with CBS, MacLaine recalled her early dance teachers telling her she had “too much expression” and suggesting she consider acting. She also spoke candidly about her outlook on mortality, saying, “I’m kind of interested in going there. I’m looking forward to being part of the Heaven experience.”

The Southampton Playhouse’s screening offers local audiences a chance to revisit a classic musical and hear directly from one of its original stars, underscoring the enduring appeal of classic cinema in community cultural programming.
