Sheridan City Council to Approve $125,544 Purchase of New Dodge Durango Patrol Vehicles

The City of Sheridan is set to modernize its police fleet. City staff have prepared a recommendation for the City Council and Mayor Rich Bridger to approve the purchase of three brand‑new 2027 Dodge Durango Pursuit all‑wheel‑drive vehicles. The total cost of the acquisition is $125,544, and the vehicles will be bought from Fremont Motor Company in Lander.

Why New Vehicles Are Needed

Current patrol assets are nearing the end of their useful lives. The department’s 2015 Ford Taurus has logged more than 81,000 miles, its front end is worn, and it is no longer used for patrol duties. A 2018 Dodge Charger with over 98,000 miles is experiencing radar malfunctions and a persistent check‑engine light. An additional 2019 Dodge Charger is approaching the 100,000‑mile mark, making it increasingly costly to maintain.

Benefits of the 2027 Dodge Durango Pursuit

The Dodge Durango Pursuit AWD is purpose‑built for law‑enforcement work. Its all‑wheel‑drive platform offers superior traction in Wyoming’s winter weather, while the vehicle’s upgraded suspension and braking systems enhance officer safety during high‑speed pursuits. The newer model also includes advanced telematics, updated radar and camera packages, and a more powerful engine, all of which support the department’s mission to protect the community efficiently.

Fiscal Responsibility and Local Support

City staff emphasize that the $125,544 expenditure represents a prudent investment. By retiring three high‑mileage vehicles, the city will reduce ongoing maintenance costs, lower fuel consumption, and avoid unexpected breakdowns that can jeopardize public safety. The purchase aligns with the city’s broader budgetary goals of maintaining essential services while exercising fiscal discipline.

Council Process

The recommendation will be placed on the agenda for the upcoming council meeting. Council members are expected to discuss the proposal, consider any public comments, and vote on the allocation of funds. Mayor Bridger has expressed confidence that the new fleet will bolster the department’s ability to respond to emergencies across Sheridan’s neighborhoods.

Community Impact

Residents can anticipate faster response times and a more reliable police presence as the new Durango Pursuit vehicles join the fleet. The upgrade reflects Sheridan’s commitment to safeguarding families, supporting local law‑enforcement officers, and ensuring that the city’s infrastructure keeps pace with modern standards.

Next Steps

Once approved, the city will finalize the purchase with Fremont Motor Company, schedule delivery of the vehicles, and begin the transition process. Training for officers on the new equipment will be coordinated with the manufacturer’s technical team to ensure a seamless integration into daily operations.
