Ball Arena to receive $135 million renovation to link stadium with downtown Denver

Denver’s iconic Ball Arena is set for a major $135 million renovation that will better connect the multipurpose venue to the heart of downtown. The project, unveiled by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment on Friday, focuses on the east side of the arena – the façade that faces the city’s bustling core.

Key improvements

The centerpiece of the upgrade is an expanded east atrium featuring an expansive glass façade, new escalators and a brand‑new team shop. Inside, concourses will be re‑configured to ease congestion, and three private clubhouses will be added for premium fans. The exterior of the atrium will be transformed into a courtyard, creating an outdoor gathering space for families and community members before and after events.

Timeline and phased construction

Construction is planned in several phases to minimize disruption for fans and neighbors. Officials say the work will be completed in time for the 2028‑2029 NBA and NHL seasons, which traditionally kick off in late September or early October.

Broader district redevelopment

The arena renovation is part of a larger 55‑acre redevelopment vision for the Ball Arena district. The first phase will revamp Parking Lot A on the east side of the stadium, bordering Speer Boulevard. That phase includes a new hotel, a performance venue and two residential buildings that could house roughly 300 homes.

A signature bridge, dubbed “Wynkoop Crossing,” will span Speer Boulevard, linking the new development directly to downtown at Wynkoop Street. The bridge received key approval from the Denver City Council earlier this year, and construction could begin as soon as this year.

Economic and community impact

Local leaders see the renovation and surrounding development as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation and a stronger sense of community. By turning a sea of parking lots into a vibrant extension of downtown, the project aims to attract visitors, support local businesses and provide new housing options for families seeking to live close to the city’s cultural and entertainment hub.

“This investment not only modernizes a beloved sports venue but also reinforces Denver’s commitment to building vibrant, family‑friendly neighborhoods,” said a spokesperson for Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. “We’re excited to create spaces where fans can gather, shop and enjoy the city’s energy before stepping into the arena.”

What this means for Denver residents

For Denver families, the upgraded arena promises a more comfortable and accessible experience on game nights and concert evenings. The new courtyard will serve as a safe, open area for children and seniors to mingle, while the expanded concourses aim to reduce wait times and improve overall flow.

City officials emphasize that the phased approach will keep traffic and noise impacts low, ensuring that nearby neighborhoods can continue their daily routines with minimal interruption.

Looking ahead

As the renovation moves forward, the community will watch closely to see how the new amenities and surrounding development shape Denver’s downtown landscape. With the 2028‑2029 sports seasons on the horizon, the arena’s refreshed look is poised to become a point of pride for residents who value strong families, thriving local economies and the freedoms that come with vibrant public spaces.
