The Shawnee Planning Commission voted 6-0 to approve the rezoning of about 14 acres of unplatted land in between Renner and Maurer roads from Commercial Highway to an Agricultural zoning district.
Background
The land, located at 6040 Renner Road, was previously rezoned to commercial highway in 1985 for a shopping plaza that never came to fruition. One house is built on the southern end of the property.
According to Mark Zielsdorf, a city planner for Shawnee, the agricultural zoning district can act as a holding zone for lands where future expansion is possible, but yet not appropriate or feasible.
Dan Foster, land architect for Schlagel & Associates, represented the wishes of the property owner, stating that the property owner just wants to get it back to AG so they can continue to be a residential use.
Future Development
The site is slotted for mixed use within the Achieve Shawnee Future Land Use Framework, which would allow for a variety of uses including residential, commercial and industrial, among others, on the same property.
The land being rezoned to agricultural means the city would be preparing it for future, undetermined development, Zielsdorf said.
