A Shattuck volunteer firefighter is recovering at home after suffering burns during a Fourth of July fundraiser, with support from family, friends, and the community.
Accident Details
Trenton Swenn, a volunteer firefighter, said the accident occurred as he and another person tried to relight the smoker after it had gone out. Swenn stated, ‘We went ahead and tried to relight the tank and the smoker and it flashed us, and it blew back and got me real good.’
Swenn’s wife, Journee, who is 36 weeks pregnant with the couple’s second child, received a phone call about the incident and rushed to the hospital with their son. Swenn was later transferred to a burn center, where he underwent several treatments before doctors determined he could continue his recovery at home.
Recovery and Support
As Swenn recovers, he and Journee said they have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from family, friends, fellow firefighters, and even strangers. Journee expressed her gratitude, saying, ‘I mean, it really, I feel like I genuinely have no words just for how grateful we both are.’
Doctors expect Swenn to make a full recovery, though he will need several weeks to heal at home before returning to his work as a firefighter.
