Del City police officers were honored during a city council meeting for saving a 2-year-old boy from drowning in a backyard pool on Southeast 19th Street.
Incident Details
The incident happened on a Sunday afternoon when police were called to a possible drowning. Officers arrived to find the child limp and hardly breathing, and they immediately began CPR. The boy regained consciousness as EMS arrived.
According to the police report, the child’s floatie had flipped while he was in the pool, and family members, who were inside the house at the time, rushed outside and began CPR before officers took over. The child was taken to OU Children’s Hospital and released the next day.
Lt. Blake Reichert reminded parents to never leave children unsupervised in or near water. He added that the department is proud of the officers, saying, “Anytime they can save a life, it’s an honor and why they do what they do.”
