Matthew Duenes, a Shallowater native, has fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper. Duenes, who graduated from Shallowater High School and South Plains College, is currently serving as a Trooper II with the Texas DPS.

Inspiration from a Young Age

Duenes’ interest in law enforcement was sparked when he was in the 3rd grade. A Texas Ranger gave a presentation at his school, speaking about integrity, courage, and the importance of protecting others. This experience left a lasting impression on Duenes, who later had a mentor from First Baptist Shallowater’s youth group who invested in him and guided him towards a career in law enforcement.

Duenes’ role as a trooper involves high-visibility patrol on public highways, enforcing traffic and criminal laws, as well as assisting local, state, and federal agencies. He also participates in school visits and presentations, warrant service, and serves as a Field Training Officer.

Community Involvement

Outside of his duties as a state trooper, Duenes enjoys spending time with his family and supporting his community by being a good neighbor and staying involved in local events. He believes in earning respect through his actions, not just his title, and strives to make a positive impact in his community.
