SF District 8 Candidates Support Housing Development

The four candidates running to replace Supervisor Rafael Mandelman in District 8 recently discussed their housing policies at a forum hosted by YIMBY Action and the Housing Action Coalition. All candidates agreed that District 8, which includes the Castro and Glen Park, needs more housing.

Housing Development Plans

Darshini Patel, Gary McCoy, Michael Nguyen, and Manny Yekutiel all expressed support for redevelopment at the Church and Market streets Safeway. However, they disagreed on inclusionary housing rates, with McCoy and Nguyen opposing the recent decrease from 15 to 5 percent for new market-rate housing.

Yekutiel and Patel supported lowering the inclusionary rate, with Yekutiel suggesting its removal for development on Market Street. Yekutiel proposed building 10,000 new homes in eight years, including 6,000 on Market Street between Castro and Octavia, and using property tax revenue to fund affordable housing.

Nguyen emphasized the need to focus on getting developers to follow through on already approved projects, rather than incentivizing new ones. McCoy supported the mayor’s upzoning plan and proposed reforming San Francisco’s building codes to increase housing production.
