Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced she will vote against President Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Todd Blanche. This decision puts the nomination in jeopardy as Murkowski joins fellow centrist Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in opposition.

Nomination Hangs in the Balance

With Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., out indefinitely and Democrats expected to vote no, a third GOP opponent would block the nomination. Murkowski stated she had “numerous constructive meetings” with Blanche but will oppose his nomination, citing the need for an Attorney General who will check the administration’s impulses.

Murkowski also expressed concerns over the “politicization” and “even weaponization” of the Justice Department under the Trump administration. She questioned the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files and the proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which she termed a “slush fund”.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., remains undecided on his vote for Blanche.
