In a late-night session, Senate Republicans successfully passed a bill allocating billions of dollars in funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The measure passed with a 52-47 vote, largely along party lines. Notably, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined Democrats in opposing the bill.
Democratic Criticism
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., criticized the bill, asserting that it reflects misplaced priorities by bolstering former President Donald Trump’s influence and failing to address the economic needs of American families. Schumer stated, “Tonight, Senate Republicans passed a rotten bill that makes their priorities painfully clear: more money for Donald Trump, more power for Donald Trump, and nothing to lower costs for working families.”
Schumer further accused Republicans of protecting a so-called “slush fund” for Trump, while neglecting efforts to reduce costs for housing, healthcare, gas, and childcare. He emphasized that Democrats are committed to easing financial burdens for Americans, contrasting this with what he described as a Republican agenda focused on empowering Trump.
Funding Details and Future Steps
The bill includes a $70 billion allocation for ICE and CBP, which Schumer labeled as “Trump’s personal police force.” The Justice Department had previously announced the establishment of “The Anti-Weaponization Fund” as part of a settlement agreement, intended to address claims of weaponization and lawfare. However, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche noted that the fund has not been set up, with no commissioners named or claims made.
The legislation must still pass the House of Representatives before reaching President Donald Trump for approval. The outcome in the House will determine the final fate of this funding package.
