Maine Senate Candidate Denies Knowledge of Tattoo’s Nazi Symbolism

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, is under scrutiny due to a tattoo on his chest that has been linked to Nazi symbolism. Platner has stated that he was unaware of the tattoo’s associations until recently, despite claims from his former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, that he knew of its meaning years ago.

Controversy Over Tattoo

The tattoo in question is described as a Totenkopf, a skull-and-crossbones emblem used by Nazi SS units. Fifield, a conservative activist, reportedly told friends in August 2025 that Platner had a Nazi tattoo. Platner, however, maintains that he only learned of its meaning last October and that he got the tattoo during his time in the Marine Corps in 2007, while on leave in Croatia.

Platner appeared on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” and addressed the controversy, stating that he could not explain why Fifield seemed aware of the tattoo’s Nazi links before he was. He emphasized that he had the tattoo for 17 years without anyone raising concerns, including during screenings for gang and hate-related tattoos when he reenlisted in the Army.

Allegations of Past Behavior

The tattoo controversy is part of a broader report by The New York Times on Platner’s past relationships with women, including allegations of troubling behavior. Fifield has accused Platner of physical intimidation, claims which he has strongly denied, labeling them as false and politically motivated. Platner has acknowledged struggling with undiagnosed PTSD and alcohol use during a difficult period in his life but insists he has since made significant personal improvements.

Platner’s campaign continues to support his denials of any wrongdoing, focusing on his efforts to move forward and build a movement in Maine. He has expressed regret for his past behavior but remains firm in disputing the more serious allegations against him.
