NASA Astronauts Temporarily Shelter Due to ISS Air Leak

On Friday, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) were instructed by NASA to temporarily seek shelter due to an air leak. The incident led to five astronauts moving into the SpaceX Dragon capsule, which is docked at the station, as a precautionary measure.

Precautionary Measures Taken

The decision to shelter was made out of an abundance of caution, according to NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens, who communicated the situation via a post on X. The leak was identified in the Zvezda service module transfer tunnel, a part of the Russian segment of the ISS that has experienced similar issues in the past.

Russian cosmonauts were tasked with addressing the leak. Although partial repairs have been made previously, a more comprehensive repair operation was planned following the discovery of new leaks. However, these efforts were paused to allow for further assessment and data collection.

Return to Normal Operations

Approximately two hours after the initial shelter order, the crew was instructed to end the safe haven procedures and return to their regular duties. The current crew of Expedition 74 includes NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot from France, and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrey Fedyaev.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining the aging infrastructure of the ISS, particularly in areas that have shown vulnerabilities over time. NASA and Roscosmos continue to collaborate closely to ensure the safety and functionality of the space station.
