Florida Sen. Ashley Moody called for the immediate unanimous passage of H.R. 7008, known as the Stop Insider Trading Act, on the Senate floor Monday night. Senate Democrats objected to the request, preventing the measure from moving forward without standard debate and voting procedures.
Bill Provisions
The bill, which passed the House with bipartisan support last week, contains provisions to restrict financial trading by lawmakers and establish national voting rules. Under the proposed legislation, members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children would generally be prohibited from buying individual stocks and would be required to issue public notices prior to selling any assets. Additionally, the measure includes a requirement for voters nationwide to present identification at the polls.
Sen. Moody stated, ‘The American People expect results, and I didn’t come to the Senate to just listen as the vast majority of this country call for securing our elections and banning members from trading stocks.’ She emphasized the need to restore trust in the government.
Public Support
Proponents of both policies point to broad public support for the measures. Data from a Pew Research Center survey shows 83% of American adults favor requiring photo identification to vote, including 76% of Black adults and 82% of Hispanic adults. On financial reform, a University of Maryland study found 86% of Americans support banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks.
