Selma police department needs facility upgrades, equipment and pay raise, interim chief says

Selma, Ala. — Interim Police Chief Michael Perry told city leaders that the Selma Police Department faces a critical need for facility repairs, modern equipment and a competitive salary structure. Perry said the department’s four‑member search committee is narrowing a field of about a dozen candidates for the permanent chief position, but the next leader will inherit a culture and infrastructure that require immediate attention.

Facility conditions hinder officer effectiveness

Perry described ongoing roofing problems and water leaks in the police headquarters, noting that several offices lack functional air‑conditioning. He added that the department’s parking lot has become a “graveyard” for broken‑down squad cars and evidence storage units, with many vehicles sitting idle for years.

Equipment shortfalls send the wrong message

According to the interim chief, outdated gear and insufficient resources convey to officers that the community does not value their service. He emphasized that modernizing radios, body‑cameras and patrol vehicles is essential for both officer safety and public confidence.

Pay levels lag behind responsibilities

Current starting pay for a Selma police officer stands at $18 per hour, a figure Perry called “nowhere near enough” for the duties performed. The last salary increase occurred in 2021, roughly five years ago. Perry argued that higher wages would help retain qualified personnel and attract new recruits who are committed to confronting crime rather than avoiding it.

City council response and next steps

City Council President Kennard Randolph confirmed that the council will hold public interviews with the finalists selected by the search committee. Those interviews are intended to give residents a voice in the selection process and to ensure the eventual chief aligns with community expectations for transparency and accountability.

The interim chief stressed that rebuilding public trust must begin with officers themselves, stating, “If the standards of law enforcement do not fit your profile, then you are in the wrong business.” He called for a comprehensive plan that addresses both the physical plant and the morale of the force.

Selma residents and local businesses are watching the process closely, recognizing that a well‑equipped and fairly compensated police department is a cornerstone of neighborhood safety and economic stability. The city’s upcoming decisions on budget allocations for repairs, equipment purchases and salary adjustments will shape the department’s ability to serve the community effectively.

As the search committee finalizes its shortlist, city officials say they will consider candidates’ experience with department reform, community policing and fiscal stewardship. The goal, according to Perry, is to appoint a chief who can lead a cultural shift while securing the resources needed for a modern, responsive police service.
