UTSA postpones fall start after attempted cyber intrusion shuts down campus systems

San Antonio – The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) announced Wednesday that the start of its fall semester will be delayed after university officials detected an attempted unauthorized activity against its technology systems. As a precaution, the school took key online platforms offline, including Canvas, the One Stop portal and other student services.

Students react to the outage

Students across all class levels reported being locked out of essential resources. Freshmen Santiago Barron and Sean Infante described the experience as “shocking” and “annoying,” noting that they could not browse student organizations or access course materials on the first day of school. Senior Maria Wence, who also works as a KSAT intern, said she was unable to log into Canvas, the only way she can reach her classes, and that the One Stop website would not let her view personal information.

Other students expressed a more pragmatic view. Sophomore Christian Ruszkiewicz said the notification gave him extra time to prepare for the semester, commenting, “I was kind of happy because I don’t have the stuff prepared. It is what it is.”

University response and timeline

UTSA officials described the event as an “attempted unauthorized activity of technology systems.” They emphasized that the university does not believe any data was accessed or stolen, and that the shutdown was an “abundance of caution” to protect student information. The university’s website notes that UTSA’s cybersecurity program ranks among the nation’s top programs, a fact that struck irony for Infante, who is majoring in cybersecurity.

According to the university’s news release, the academic calendar—including fall break and the end‑of‑semester dates—remains unchanged. However, some tuition‑related deadlines have been pushed back to give students additional time to meet financial obligations.

Impact on campus life

With online services offline, many in‑person activities continued as scheduled, allowing students to explore extracurricular options on campus. Nevertheless, the loss of digital access has disrupted class registration, assignment submission and communication with faculty.

UTSA’s IT department is working to restore services as quickly as possible. The university has directed students to monitor official channels for updates and has provided alternative contact methods for urgent matters.

Broader context

This incident follows a similar disruption earlier in the year when Canvas experienced outages during finals, affecting students at public schools and universities throughout Texas. While the current event appears isolated to UTSA, it underscores the growing importance of robust cybersecurity measures for educational institutions.

Students and staff are encouraged to remain vigilant, use strong passwords and report any suspicious activity. The university plans to conduct a thorough review of its security protocols once systems are fully restored.
