San Antonio Zoo mourns loss of male okapi Epulu, a key conservation ambassador

The San Antonio Zoo is grieving the passing of Epulu, a male okapi who became a beloved figure in the zoo’s conservation outreach. Epulu arrived at the zoo in 2014 and quickly assumed a role beyond that of a typical exhibit animal, serving as a living ambassador for the rare forest‑dwelling okapi, a species native to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to zoo officials, Epulu’s caretakers observed signs of colic and a reduced appetite last week. Despite prompt veterinary treatment, his health continued to decline, and he succumbed to his illness. The zoo released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss of an animal that had contributed significantly to public education and species‑preservation efforts.

Conservation impact

During his decade‑long residency, Epulu helped the zoo highlight the plight of okapis, which are classified as endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Educational programs featuring Epulu emphasized the importance of protecting Central African forests and supported the broader mission of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to coordinate breeding and research initiatives.

In 2023, Epulu and his mate welcomed a calf named Gates. The calf was transferred to the Los Angeles Zoo as part of a coordinated breeding program designed to maintain genetic diversity and strengthen the global okapi population. The San Antonio Zoo continues to work with the AZA on next steps for the program, ensuring that the species’ conservation momentum is not lost.

Community response

Visitors and volunteers expressed their condolences on social media, recalling personal encounters with Epulu and noting how his calm demeanor and striking appearance sparked curiosity among children and adults alike. The zoo plans to hold a small memorial service for staff and supporters, honoring Epulu’s contribution to wildlife education and the ongoing fight to preserve his species.

Zoo leadership reiterated their commitment to the conservation of endangered animals and announced that they will continue to collaborate with partner institutions to support breeding, research, and habitat‑preservation projects. While Epulu’s death is a loss for the San Antonio community, the zoo hopes his legacy will inspire continued advocacy for wildlife protection.
