As Texas takes on a bigger role in the battle for control of the U.S. House, San Antonio has an unusual number of targeted races drawing money and attention to this area in November. The city’s new 35th Congressional District, created by President Donald Trump’s efforts to squeeze more Republican-friendly districts out of Texas, is one of the most competitive.
Top Races to Watch
The U.S. Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton is the top-of-the-ticket for Texans in 2026. Democrats are feeling good about their prospects, with Talarico raising significant funds for his campaign. However, Republicans are confident that Paxton can excite voters and win the seat.
Another key race is Texas House District 118, which was a blue stronghold before state Rep. John Lujan flipped it in 2022. Democrats think it should be theirs now that they’re headed into favorable midterm conditions, and their nominee, Kristian Carranza, has raised more money than any first-time state House candidate in Texas history.
The Bexar County Judge race and the District Attorney race are also gaining attention, with Democrats Ron Nirenberg and Luz Elena Chapa facing off against Republicans Patrick Von Dohlen and Ashley Foster, respectively.
