San Antonio officials clean up massive trash pile on Nevada Street after resident complaints

Residents of the East Side neighborhood on Nevada Street have finally seen relief from a two‑year‑long nuisance that turned their block into a literal eyesore. The couple who live nearby, who asked to remain anonymous, said they repeatedly called 311 and filed complaints with multiple city departments about a growing mountain of trash behind a home on the street.

“Just dumping, dumping, dumping,” the woman said, describing the situation. She added that city workers often told her they could not see the pile from the street, so they claimed there was nothing they could do.

Trash pile becomes public hazard

Earlier this week the family that occupied the home moved out, and an unknown party began moving the debris from the backyard onto the sidewalk in front of the house. Neighbors reported seeing mattresses, clothing, shoes, ice chests and other household items piled high. The accumulation also attracted wildlife, including raccoons, possums and a family of cats with newborn kittens.

“The smell, and, like, it just hits you in the face,” the neighbor said, noting that human waste had been dumped in bucket loads, intensifying the odor that spread throughout the area.

City response and cleanup

City Development Services spokeswoman confirmed that code‑enforcement investigators had visited the property recently. While city staff cannot enter private yards without permission, they can address violations that are visible from public right‑of‑way. The spokeswoman said the city planned to act now that the trash was on the sidewalk, which is subject to the city’s bulky‑item pickup rules.

San Antonio’s bulky‑item program has size limits and does not include regular household trash. The pile on Nevada Street exceeded those limits, prompting the city to arrange a contractor to remove the debris within hours of the complaint.

The property owner will be billed for the removal costs, according to the city spokesperson.

What this means for the community

This incident highlights the challenges residents face when dealing with illegal dumping and the importance of clear city guidelines on what can be left for bulk collection. It also underscores the role of code‑enforcement officials in protecting public health and neighborhood quality of life.

Neighbors hope the swift action will deter future dumping and encourage the city to continue enforcing waste‑management regulations consistently across all neighborhoods.
